I disappoint myself sometimes. I have been doing this long enough to know about how long my batteries last. But no not tonight. I have three songs from Absolute Boys [they started early/I was late], a whole Slug Guts set, and only 26min of the My Disco set. All of them very good. My Disco are near the top of my list at the moment. You will love them.

Dead Meadow
at The Globe. I like the Globe although the sloping floor kills my calves after a couple of hours.
Slug Guts played a great set. The expanded lineup with vocalist and sax adds a lot to the sound. Very swampy.
Dead Meadow play stuff that could easily become indulgent. They avoid this altogether and play short songs that never over stay their welcome. It did not seem like 1hr 20min. That is always a good sign.
I also would like to thank Robert McManus and the Heathen Skulls organization for bringing these guys [and other bands like OM] to Brisbane. Too many tours never make it for whatever reason [I don't pretend to know why they don't get here] but if Dead Meadow can be made to work you have to wonder.

The Weekend Starts Here
Burst City is fast becoming the place of choice for a night out. Cheap, cheerful, under regulated. And usually a well thought out band list. Tonight I missed Fabulous Diamonds as they were running a bit late and I was to see them the next day at Frankly. The set they played was apparently harder than the Frankly set. That would have been influenced by the supports from Blank Realm and a very heavy Slug Guts.

Lightning Bolt
Try this. The whole show was amazing. Final show from The Grey Daturas, The Primitive Calculators get back together, Slug Gutz bring in the new, Abject Leader bring the incomprehensible AV shows on 16mm [I don't record soundtracks], and Lightning Bolt bring the noize.
But the sound is difficult. The Grey Dat's drone is hard enough at the best of times and the set here is actually OK.
The Primitive Calculators should really stop asking the crowd if they can hear the [bass, organ, guitar, vocals] because the crowd usually says "No, turn it up" So the sound is mush. Why do they have a sound person in the first place if they are going to rely on a bunch of drunks down the front to set levels.
Lightning Bolt, well I would have had to have been in the front row and then I'd have bass in the left ear and drums in the right but there is no way I would go into that crowd. As it was I was only 10ft back and up a step and what I got was mainly bass. I have treated the recording a bit to up the drums but there are better recordings around.

Local Produce @ The Hi-Fi Bar
Won a ticket. Yeah! So I went. Probably would have gone anyway. Gentle Ben for those who don't kbnow is a BCorbett from 6fthick. It's all his lurve songs.
Vegas Kings are beaut. Ben from Kings is one of the best guitarists around for my money. And he writes killer songs. If you haven't heard Texas Tea look round for it and see his sensitive side.

Clockcleaner On Fire at Rosies
Sorry but it had to be said.
Thursday night was memorable for all the wrong reasons.
It started out OK with sets by local bands Z Rays and Slug Guts. Seen Z Rays before and had the same problem again; vocals. The first time i saw them I couldn't see the stage very well and it was about halfway through their set before I realized they weren't an instrumental band. They really should talk to the sound guy.
Missed the first song or two from Slug Guts but their sound was more balanced. I enjoyed their set though the second last song did go on a bit. Will see them again.
Snake Run was 10 minutes of straight up punk. Loud fast and incomprehensible. They are good at it. I just aren't really interested in it. There was a recording glitch at about 7 min and I lost about 20 secs of their set. There is a quick fade in/out so the jump isn't too disconcerting.
For me, Clockcleaner were disappointing. The high pitched guitar sound was promising during the warm up but once the songs started it all turned into a mush especially with the amount of reverb in the vocals. Apart from that I thought the songs just weren't that good.
Mind you most of the crowd seemed to be enjoying themselves. Especially the hard core fans down the front. So much so that during a cover of Divine Hammer [it's not easy to turn that song into a dirge but they were trying real hard] one of them decided that the only way to show his appreciation was to light a fire at Sharkeys feet using the toilet paper another guy had liberated earlier.
Much hilarity ensued until someone thought to use the powder fire extinguisher firstly with a quick shot at the fire, then emptying the rest into the air. Minutes later we [everyone in the building] are on the sidewalk watching the fire brigade enter the not quite towering inferno. I learnt two things; that powder tastes like shit, and people who light fires for fun are beneath contempt whether they have a 'problem' or not.
