Kurt Vile & The Violators

I was looking forward to Kurt Vile after seeing him at Primavera. The extended set was more relaxed and the audience including me had a great time. I left before the last couple of songs as it was way late after Blank Realm delayed proceedings for a long time with gear problems. Shit happens.

Keep On Dancin's CD Launch

This went pretty well.

Strange Attractors are a variation of the Velociraptor collective for want of a better description but the music is a bit more mainstream while still retaining the heavy pop sensibility. That means they're good.

Cobwebbs are new to me and play pop that after a few songs settle into more of a groove that at times reminded me of The Music which again is a good thing.

Keep On Dancin's are sort of like They Shoot Horses Don't They dancing in case you think it's going to be upbeat.

Blank Realm have been to America though you can't tell by looking at them. Always different. Always exciting.

The Weekend Starts Here

Burst City is fast becoming the place of choice for a night out. Cheap, cheerful, under regulated. And usually a well thought out band list. Tonight I missed Fabulous Diamonds as they were running a bit late and I was to see them the next day at Frankly. The set they played was apparently harder than the Frankly set. That would have been influenced by the supports from Blank Realm and a very heavy Slug Guts.

Bursting With Super Wild Goodness

Friday and Saturday night were bigger than big at Burst City and The Hanger. I am now convinced that the top five bands in Brisbane are Blank Realm, Loomer, Kitchen's Floor, No Anchor, and yeah, your band.

Best sets I have seen from The Sips and Blank Realm. The Seizures are promising. Southern Comfort were better tomorrow night and while the start of songs was a bit slow they usually got into a nice groove by the end.

Super Wild Horses play snappy tight tunes, look fabulous and if there is any justice they be a big thing.

Sunday and Monday nights were rather more brutal as you will see. And no I'm not happy with the headline either.

Jandek

The Hi-Fi Bar and it was relatively gentle to the bands tonight.

Black Widow with Joel Stern make noise that is hypnotic and complex but easy to listen to. I'm never sure what to say about music like this. I find it dfficult to see the overarching patterns if there are any so I can only enjoy the moment.

Lost Domain were great. The singer getting more frantic [much nicer word than unhinged] as he went along with support from some deadnotes. Lotta fun

Blank Realm I keep getting mixed up with noise bands i guess because of their name. They are actually a pretty good rock band though that may be based just their choice of material on the night.

Jandek I know largely from his earlier acoustic work so tonight was a revelation. Quite electric and in parts almost rocking. His backing band were really good. I am pretty sure the bass guitar didn't open her eyes the entire set. If you know Jandek or if you don't it doesn't make much sense me trying to describe it so you best listen for yourself. This was one of my top shows of the year so far and for surprise it will be hard to beat.

An Early Evening At The Troubadour

School nights aren't what they used to be. Or it could be just me. Anyway by the time Mr Beach was due I was gone. Sorry Mr Beach. But I did see The Deadnotes feat The Legend, Blank Realm, and Kitchen's Floor

In fact the main reason I went was to see The Deadnotes. I saw the gig advert and thought gee I would like to see how The Deadnotes go without The Legend but this was not to be. Some other time. Mind you I quite enjoy The Legends work. Especially the last song where I sing along shifting the phrases around to match my experience and reliving parts of it that I probably would rather forget as well as the high spots.

Blank Realm's set without the bass guitar is almost playful compared to some earlier sets I have seen of them.

I have not seen Kitchen's Floor before and was quite impressed.

The Step Inn in July

Ric's is free but the Step Inn is cheap and the beer is cheaper. So two weeks in July upstairs at the Step Inn local garage pop punk stuff is on display with first a set by Sweet Dreams which is advertised as a combination of various other bands but which looks suspiciously like eat laser scumbag with a different drummer. This is quite a good thing.

The next week it's a big night. The Sips release the 7'' that's been cluttering up the underbed space for nigh on a year now. To support them they have gathered the cream of local bands including the newly formed Undead Apes which really does have members of various other bands Sekiden, Eat Laser Scumbag, Dick Nasty, Gazoonga Attack, and Fancy Boys [one from each], Blank Realm, and The Heels.

It was great. Though the sound upstairs at the Step Inn is iffy.

As a bonus I will throw this one in. Early in the year Eddy Current Suppression Ring did a show at the Step Inn downstairs and it was excellent. My recording gear decided to only record one channel properly and I filed it away. I have now produced a mono file. It's actually quite listenable.
