Undead Apes Do Brisbands

First night of the Undead Apes January residency at The Waiting Room and they do A to E. Why not.

Undead Apes - Live @ The Waiting Room - 05 Jan 2012

Last night of the Undead Apes residency at The Waiting Room was an All Killer, No Filler run through Brisbane power pop from the last 10? years. The band was without Simon for the night. The sound recording is uncomfortable listening so unless you are a fan don't bother. The video sound is better. Got some of the set on video and the sound wasn't distorted so here they are. The Set list is as follows

Apple Tree - The Melniks
Certifiable - Dollar Bar
Big Pineapple - Extra Foxx
Pleased To Meet You - Sekiden
You Smelt It You Dealt It - Roshambo
Never Let You Go - The Sips

Jonesin' For A Chromin' - R.A.D.

Queen Slipper/Slave Lay-by - Dollar Bar
Pinball Summer - Sekiden

It's All Good - Nice Wig Ted

Undead Apes - Live @ The Waiting Room - 26 Jan 2012

Also Turnpike played. The sound recording is OK and there are two videos of their performance.

Turnpike - Live @ The Waiting Room - 26 Jan 2012

And finally Arcola played their last show with Ben Dougherty leaving to concentrate on his commitments to Texas Tea. Missed the first couple of songs.

No Anchor launch Real Pain Supernova

Whatever you think of No Anchors recorded output (and I'm loving it) there is no doubt they deliver on stage. The launch of the LP is a case in point.

I love Dreamtime and if I ever say I'm tired of The Undead Apes you will know I have been replaced by a mindless automaton.

Tym's Guitars In-Store Shows

I have posted the Nova Scotia In-Store performance already. I've been to three more since then and missed a few.

Axxonn [Tom Hall] moved to America a few days after this set. He has taken some time off to get married but that is out of the way now and I'm sure he is readying his assault on the locals. He will do well.
Axxonn - Live @ Tym's Guitars - 18 Mar 2011

I love this band. They have pretty much written their second albums material and it will be as good as the first. This set is great for the guitar sound from John Mercer. At most shows his sound is buried in the mix but not today.
Undead Apes - Live @ Tym's Guitars - 03 April 2011

John Weise plays bass guitar. Well more like he uses a bass guitar to produce the raw sounds he then plays with on pedals and assorted gear. Great stuff.
John Wiese - Live @ Tym's Guitars - 08 April 2011

A short piece from Thrones and if I'd had the time I would have liked to go to the show to see how he developed the ideas.

Puppy Love at the Jubliee

A Flood Benefit for the RSPCA [Puppy Love, geddit?] that moved from the Step Inn to the Jubilee so the Bronx could use the upstairs room as Green. Not a big turnout because of Soundwave sideshows and apathy. But a good time was had by all who made the effort. Thanks to Miss Jess for her work.

Undead Apes Vinyl Launch

The Troubadour should have closed that night. I can't imagine the final night would have been half as good as this one; drunker and longer maybe but if I want to cry in my beer over music I'll watch the X-Factor final again.

OK you're right, I won't ever do that again. And actually I'm just pissed off I wasn't fast enough to get a ticket to the Final Night. But I did see the Final Night of X-Factor and I did cry in my beer. Dear god, the inhumanity.

But on Saturday night a seriously smashing time was had by all. Not as emotional as last weeks Vegas Kings send off which was sad but in a good way. You can't be sad watching Undead Apes. Undead Apes are what happened when a a couple of punks took power-pop out into the carpark and convinced it to harden the fuck up. How could the love child of Sekiden, Dick Nasty, Gazoonga Attack, and every band Adam Scott has ever been in be anything but great.

I bought the T-shirt and the Vinyl. You should too. And they are doing dates in Sydney and Melbourne to support the release so keep an eye out. I videoed Taxes on my new Nokia N8 and it looks good and now it is HD as well.

Also I'm looking forward to the Nova Scotia album in the new year.

Vegas Kings Third Last Show? and the bloody Undead Apes again

plus Boy or Astroboy and BMXRays. Boy or Astroboy are a bunch of local luminaries doing vocal less surf rock. Who'd have guessed. And good they are. BMXRays are three piece power pop punk with a sense of humour. What could possibly go wrong.

Yeah the Undead Apes again. You may be bored but I feel blessed.

Vegas Kings do what they do so well it seems effortless if very sweaty. Ben is one of the best guitarist in town. Couple more shows and they retiring. I will miss them.

Tiny Spiders, Undead Apes, And Broken Microphones

This was my first visit to the new Clubhouse. It is in a room under a pub and quite spacious, nice area in general. Looking forward to more shows there. The sound system is OK I guess. But the FOH is set to one side and on the night the sound guy was a bit slack in adjusting once the set was started. In the Tiny Spiders set he wandered out to the floor about two songs before the end and wandered back and twiddled something and suddenly I could hear the vocals.

Undead Apes were great. Really looking forward to their recorded output soon.

Tiny Spiders - Live @ The Clubhouse - 27 Aug 2010

Undead Apes - Live @ The Clubhouse - 27 Aug 2010

and then my microphones died. So i went home and ordered some more. This was Friday night at 10.30pm in Brisbane. I ordered from Sound Professionals in New Jersey where it was 8.30am Friday morning. Paid for the UPS Express delivery. Followed the package as it went from NJ to Louisville KY to Honolulu to Sydney where it arrived at 12.30pm Sunday. Then it took till Tuesday morning to move the last 1000km.

But I'm ready.

Dropbears Benefit and More

A number of local musicians have a social AFL football team known as The Dropbears. Apparently their skill levels range from OK to not OK at all really but they keep going back each week for more punishment. You think they'd get enough of that in the bands. Anyway, they needed money for after game refreshments probably so they put on a show. I gave them $10. They gave me this.

Midget Pillion - Live @ The Step Inn - 11 June 2010

Undead Apes - Live @ The Step Inn - 11 June 2010

plus Seaplane who were very good indeed.

Meanwhile downstairs there was another show and I alternated between them. As a consequence some of the sets are short by one or two songs as the coordination between the two rooms was slightly off. I'm not complaining, they were separate shows after all. I gave these guys $8. They gave me this.

Here's One I Missed

No Anchor threw a party and The Sips, Undead Apes, and Damon Black came to help them celebrate. Damon started early so he was watched b a crowd of about 5, mostly the next act. I walked in about half way through and enjoyed Damon's solo effort on electronic machinery that did much more than just go bing.

Undead Apes get better each time. A great bunch of songs from some of Brisbane's best pop rock players.

Undead Apes - Live @The Zoo - 15 Oct 2009

The Sips are the same but different enough that you don't know what they will actually sound like each time you see them. By that mean whether they will be merely good or great. Tonight they were Good+.

The Sips - Live @The Zoo - 15 Oct 2009

No Anchor does what it does. A band of two with a single minded determination to wring every last nuance out of the 'simple' bass riffs that boot the songs off. I can't get enough.

Chinese Burns at The Step Inn

Another night of garage punk pop ish stuff. Actually one of the better nights recently. Geese are new and consist of 2 Z-Rays and a drummer. Undead Apes, Fancy Boys, and Chinese Burns share members but come from two states. It's complicated but it seems to work.

The PA upstairs at the Step Inn sounded good for a change. I credit Xavier from fancy boys/chinese burns [from melbourne] for this.

The Step Inn in July

Ric's is free but the Step Inn is cheap and the beer is cheaper. So two weeks in July upstairs at the Step Inn local garage pop punk stuff is on display with first a set by Sweet Dreams which is advertised as a combination of various other bands but which looks suspiciously like eat laser scumbag with a different drummer. This is quite a good thing.

Sweet Dreams - Live @ The Step Inn - 11 July 2009

The next week it's a big night. The Sips release the 7'' that's been cluttering up the underbed space for nigh on a year now. To support them they have gathered the cream of local bands including the newly formed Undead Apes which really does have members of various other bands Sekiden, Eat Laser Scumbag, Dick Nasty, Gazoonga Attack, and Fancy Boys [one from each], Blank Realm, and The Heels.

It was great. Though the sound upstairs at the Step Inn is iffy.

As a bonus I will throw this one in. Early in the year Eddy Current Suppression Ring did a show at the Step Inn downstairs and it was excellent. My recording gear decided to only record one channel properly and I filed it away. I have now produced a mono file. It's actually quite listenable.
