Merenoise Melltdown 2011

Merenoise Records is a great little label here in Brisbane who put out records by people they like. This seems to be their criteria and I'm happy if they're happy.  Every now and then they throw a party.  I missed The Horrortones, Hits, and Guitar Wolf when I went to The Waiting Room to check Harmony.  I had every intention of getting back but didn't.

Go Violets were wonderful.    4 girls playing pop rock who can only get better and they are good now.

plus a couple of videos.

Texas Tea as a 4 piece was nice.

Mono

Mono - Live @ The Hi Fi - 5 October 2011

This video is taken on my N8 on the Low Light setting and the effect is dreamy which suits Mono well. Occasional clipping but the sound is not too bad. Use headphones for best effect.

No Anchor launch Real Pain Supernova

Whatever you think of No Anchors recorded output (and I'm loving it) there is no doubt they deliver on stage. The launch of the LP is a case in point.

I love Dreamtime and if I ever say I'm tired of The Undead Apes you will know I have been replaced by a mindless automaton.

No Anchor at The Step Inn

This is out of sequence but I'll put it here before the Merideth post. No Anchor played at the Step Inn supporting John Chantler at a Bon Voyage label party.

Also featured were AMMS, who were Alex Gilles, Lawrence English, and Dan Lewis. Disappointingly I arrived in time to see the last few minutes of of this group who with my luck will never play again.

Supporting them all was xNoBBQx who cannot be described, and should not be listened to. Watching the drummer beat his kit to pieces is interesting though.

John Chantler was fine but the recording does not do him justice so I'll not post it.

Which leaves No Anchor. Did I mention that No Anchor are the best band in Brisbane at the moment.

God Hates Brisbane

Awesome. Just awesome. No Anchor are probably my favourite Brisbane band right now. Every time I hear them they get better.

The whole lineup is great. Get amongst it. If you don't know the bands they are all loud and/or heavy except maybe Cured Pink who is loud and beaty.

*Room Of Inordinate Awesome *

8:30 The Entire Asian Population
9:30 Die On Planes
10:30 Cured Pink
11:30 Turnpike

*Room Of Glacial Abyss *

9:00 Ambrose Chapel
10:00 White Bears of Norway
11:00 AXXONN
12:00 No Anchor

Del Toro say Goodbye For A While

Adam, the guitarist, is off to Norway for two years so he had a party at the Hanger.

Carl is guitarist with The Narwhals. Tonight he and his acoustic guitar played alone. Some quite beautiful passages here.
Carl Monticone - Live @ The Hanger - 10 Apr 2010

Threepiece No Anchor is becoming the heaviest band in Brisbane. In this set you can actually hear the vocals. But on the downside the Fender is a little louder than the Rickenbacker but could be just my ears.
No Anchor - Live @ The Hanger - 10 Apr 2010

I have a t-shirt. Says "Play Music / Turnpike"
Turnpike - Live @ The Hanger - 10 Apr 2010

This is why we will miss this band. Thanks for a great party Adam. See you in a couple of years.

Meanwhile, Out In The Front Bar

Rational Academy and No Anchor.

The first time I have seen Rational Academy in full flight since the departure of Meredith. Almost rock these days. I like the new direction.

No Anchor with two basses will eventually destroy the world.

Here's One I Missed

No Anchor threw a party and The Sips, Undead Apes, and Damon Black came to help them celebrate. Damon started early so he was watched b a crowd of about 5, mostly the next act. I walked in about half way through and enjoyed Damon's solo effort on electronic machinery that did much more than just go bing.

Undead Apes get better each time. A great bunch of songs from some of Brisbane's best pop rock players.

Undead Apes - Live @The Zoo - 15 Oct 2009

The Sips are the same but different enough that you don't know what they will actually sound like each time you see them. By that mean whether they will be merely good or great. Tonight they were Good+.

The Sips - Live @The Zoo - 15 Oct 2009

No Anchor does what it does. A band of two with a single minded determination to wring every last nuance out of the 'simple' bass riffs that boot the songs off. I can't get enough.

Big Night Out

First to the Judy for No Anchor CD Launch. Heinz Riegler opened and his new material is beautiful. Very beautiful imagery and simple playing to showcase it. Still developing so maybe later there can be before and after comparisons but until then ou just have to take the word of anyone who has seen him recently; It will be worth the wait. So looking forward to seeing it hit daylight.

Closely followed by Laurence English on hand pumped harmonium or similar and electronic drone effects.

No Anchor did well in a room that is effectively a concrete box. Brutal.

No Anchor - Live @ The Judy - 21 Mar 2009.mp3

And so to The Step Inn for Miss Jess's Birthday bash though the bands did not know before hand that is what it was. She got to see her three favourite bands. Mine too.

I missed Nova Scotia but saw Sekiden.

Sekiden - Live @ The Step Inn - 21 Mar 2009.mp3

Also Seaplane. Again looking forward to the new CD which will be even better than the first.

All in all a great night. 5 and a half worls class acts for $25 plus beer. Where else but Brizvegas.

The Hanger

No Anchor
Introduced by a drone from Laurence English the duo launch their CD officially. The Globe is a better recording but every set they do is interesting.

Slow and Loud. Reeealy Loud.

Night One of Slow and Loud sees me at Ric's for Ur and Del Toro. Del Toro has a new HOG and Adam gets to try it out.

Del Toro - Live @ Ric's - 10 July 2008 (93.18MB)
Ur - Live @ Ric's - 10 July 2008 (88.13MB)

So night two of the slow loud rock celebrations went off at The Globe. No, I have no idea what Roshambo is doing there either but it is a nice break. Candlesnuffer played as well but I missed most of it so didn't record. I finally have a decent No Anchor set. Other times I have tried but the room or the mix just didn't work. This one does. The Grey Daturas really should be listened to with buds. I'm still not sure the full experience can be captured anyway. I think their live experience relies on the physicality of the sound.
